Business relief in 2026: More relevant than ever

For many advisers, estate planning conversations have traditionally been reserved for later life.

From April 2027, unused pension wealth is expected to be brought into scope for inheritance tax; combined with frozen allowances and rising inheritance tax receipts, this means more families are likely to be affected by inheritance tax in the years ahead.

Research from our latest report, 50:nomics, revealed that advisers expect 52% of their client base to require estate planning support in the next five years due to these changes. As a result, advisers are increasingly reviewing both when estate planning conversations should begin and the options available to clients

One option receiving increased attention is Business Relief (BR). While BR has long been part of the estate planning toolkit, advisers are increasingly exploring where it may fit within broader client planning discussions.

Why timing matters

Our 50:nomics research found that 68% of advisers have witnessed avoidable tax liabilities or family conflict as a result of planning taking place too late, while 66% believe earlier planning gives clients access to a wider range of estate planning solutions.

Yet many clients still delay. Some believe they are too young to start planning, while others assume estate planning can wait until later life.

But as the estate planning landscape evolves, advisers should increasingly encourage earlier planning conversations to maximise the strategies available to help clients preserve wealth and pass assets on efficiently.

Looking ahead

As inheritance tax planning becomes a greater focus for clients, advisers are likely to face more questions about the options available to them.

BR will not be suitable for every client, but for the right individual it can play an important role within a broader estate planning strategy.

Understanding how it works, where it may fit and how to assess it appropriately can help advisers have more informed conversations and better support client outcomes.
