Foresight - New Era of IHT: Part 2 - A technical client journey through business relief

£5.5 trillion of wealth is set to change hands and the long-term opportunity is huge but the risk is overnight: if a client dies tomorrow, will those assets stay with you?

In Part 1 of The New Era of IHT, we explored how structural changes and the rising role of Business Relief (BR) are reshaping IHT planning. Part 2 brings this to life with a more technical, practical focus. Following one family across three generations, we step through the client journey, from planning, to death and probate, to different beneficiary outcomes, showing how advisers can actively shape better results.

Set against Consumer Duty, this session demonstrates how to structure BR solutions that mitigate risk, strengthen engagement, and retain assets across generations.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how BR assets can provide faster access to capital and reduce administrative complexity for beneficiaries
  • Examine how BR can be used in tandem with traditional planning tools like deed of variations and discretionary trusts
  • Understand how succession relief allows the same qualifying BR assets to serve different purposes, depending on who inherits them

AJ Bell - Pensions will be subject to IHT: Where should you take income from now?

From April 2027, unused pension funds are set to become part of the IHT equation. In this session, our Senior Technical Consultant Lisa will look at the planning angles for clients with sizeable funds. The widely-publicised strategy is that clients should draw from pensions first to avoid the post-75 double taxation on death. But is that always appropriate? This session challenges that assumption, showing why the right answer depends on tax, timing and client circumstances. Using practical examples, it highlights why wrapper decisions are becoming more complex, and introduces AJ Bell’s Great Wrapper Reset – designed to help advisers and paraplanners navigate the changing planning landscape.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the impact of upcoming IHT changes on pensions
  • Evaluate income withdrawal strategies in different client scenarios
  • Apply effective wrapper and tax-planning decisions in a changing landscape

Isio - Bonds that aren't boring

Many MPS portfolios are built using familiar retail building blocks, with equities doing most of the work and diversification treated as an afterthought. Institutional investors take a different approach, focusing on outcomes first, with strategic asset allocation and disciplined implementation driving returns. This session explores what an institutional approach to portfolio construction looks like in practice, and what it means for asset allocation, risk control and the effective use of the fee budget. All of which can improve client outcomes in the more traditional wealth space.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the differences between institutional and retail investing
  • Understand the different areas of Fixed Income outside of Government and Investment Grade and how these various sub-asset classes are used in portfolio construction
  • Understand how to approach portfolio construction within global equities, and the optimal allocation of fee budgets across active and passive within equities
