Aspen - Liquidity, lifestyle, longevity: A practical approach to retirement income

The question underneath almost every retirement conversation is a simple, human one: will my money last as long as I do? A client approaching retirement is not a risk score. They are a person trusting their financial planner to answer that question and protect the life they have worked for. This is why designing a Centralised Retirement Proposition (CRP) that delivers sustainable income has never mattered more. With people living longer, markets as unpredictable as ever and clients wanting clarity about income, financial planners need a framework that is structured enough to repeat and flexible enough to fit the individual in front of them.

In this session, Aspen sets out a practical, goals-led approach to CRP design, built on a three-bucket model: liquidity, lifestyle and longevity. Bucketing can be a valuable solution at any point in a client's lifetime, but in the run-up to retirement and in the years that follow that all-important milestone, a bucketing approach can ease client anxiety, mitigate sequencing risk, and give clients the confidence to stay invested when markets move.

Learning Objectives:

  • Build a CRP framework that is clear and repeatable, yet still flexible enough to fit each client's retirement as an individual
  • Know when bucketing is the right tool and when it is not, and how existing cash, DB income, property and future liquidity events change the planning picture
  • Explore techniques that reduce risk, help clients avoid emotional decisions, and keep their confidence steady when markets fluctuate
  • See the three-bucket model in practice and how liquidity, lifestyle and longevity work together to support income sustainably and long-term growth
  • Walk through a live case study, from building the strategy to communicating and maintaining it, so the income holds up across a long retirement

PIMCO - Optimising retirement income in 2026: Navigating market dynamics

Retirement income planning stands as one of the greatest challenges in finance, famously described by Nobel laureate William Sharpe as “the nastiest, hardest problem in finance.” Today's regulatory landscape is evolving quickly, with policymakers placing increased emphasis on sequencing risk, inflation risk, and longevity risk to help retirees achieve stable and sustainable incomes. PIMCO, the world’s largest active fixed income manager, draws on over a decade of retirement research to highlight what really matters for generating consistent and predictable income for retirees.

This session will share practical strategies and solutions, providing essential knowledge for navigating contemporary retirement challenges and delivering enduring financial security to clients. Additionally, PIMCO shares core macro views, outlook on rates, inflation, and spreads, as well as the best investment ideas across the Fixed Income Spectrum.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand PIMCO’s core macro views and market outlook
  • Explore best investment ideas across the fixed income spectrum
  • Re-thinking retirement income construction
