AGENDA:

Royal London: Why you should be fussed about trusts

In this presentation, Royal London will look into why trusts remain a critical, yet often underused, element of effective protection planning. We start by examining the trust gap within the life insurance market, discussing the reasons why many policies are still written outside of trust despite the significant implications for the speed of payment, inheritance tax exposure, and client outcomes.

The session then builds a foundation of trust knowledge, explaining the roles of donors, trustees, and beneficiaries, and comparing bare and discretionary trusts along with their respective tax treatments and practical trade-offs. Explore common planning scenarios such as joint life policies and trusts and multi-benefit protection plans and trusts. Consider how trusts support business protection and Relevant Life Plans. Tackle more advanced considerations, including the relevant property regime and when protection policies may acquire a value for IHT purposes. Finally, bring everything together with practical guidance on trust registration, alternatives such as beneficiary nomination, and how advisers can confidently embed trusts into day-to-day advice to improve outcomes for clients and create long-term value for your business.

Learning Objectives:

  • Be able to explain why trusts are central to good protection outcomes
  • Be able to describe the practical steps and key considerations that make trusts work in real cases
